I’ve been a dad now since 1998 and have absolutely loved it. It has taught me more (and not just about being a parent) than anything else I have ever done.

I’ve been a partner to Sage now nearly fourteen years. It isn’t an exaggeration to say that those have been the best years of my life (with the latter seven being especially great).

We live with three cats (but have lived with as many as eight) and up until now we have lived several different lives in different places. After Paul was born we left our life in a small city (Bethlehem, PA) for a yurt (What’s a yurt?) in the Ozarks to simplify our life enough that we could both be at home with him as he grew up A couple years after that we moved to a small Ozarks town. After that I took a couple consulting jobs that took us to Michigan, New York, and Albuquerque. Fed up with life in the US we now happily live in a highrise in Toronto.

Politically, I tend to lean pretty far to the left. On some days I am not sure which of us is more liberal, Sage or I, and in that sense, Canada tends to be more in line with our views politically. The good news for Republicans back in the US is that we have no intention on ever moving back – we’re putting in our application for permanent residency and will follow shortly after with a citizenship application. The bad news (for them, anyway) is that we can and do still vote.

Our lives went through a major paradigm shift when Paul was born. Our priorities, once little more than dining out, watching TV, and playing the occasional video game shifted to being the best parents we know how to be. As part of this, we’ve learned as much as we can about attachment parenting, homeschooling (leaning towards unschooling). We try, as much as possible, to practice what we learn though it takes a great deal of effort (and isn’t always as successful as we’d like sometimes). Without a doubt, parenting has been the most difficult but also the most rewarding thing we’ve done.
