The Day After

Does anyone else remember when this movie came out? The world was quite a different place. Instead of worrying about comparatively small terrorist attacks, there was a (much more real to me anyways) fear of massive nucllear holocaust that could destroy the entire planet – not just one or two cities. And yet, people today seem far more afraid of terrorism than we were of nuclear bombs back in the day. I remember when this came out in 1983, my school sent notes home to every parent urging them not to let their kids watch this movie. My parents didn’t listen and I watched this movie when it came out. While I don’t consider it a mistake to have watched it, I do think it was one of the scarier things I’d watched as a kid. Haven’t seen it? It’s over on youtube now.

I haven’t actually seen it, but there were a number of films with that type of feel starting in the late 70s.

I was just talking to my kids about this movie on Sunday. I watched it with my mom. I don’t remember if the school had a take on it, but I remember there was a lot of talk about how to discuss it with your kids or deciding if your kids should watch it.

Wow – I never even *thought* of people actually *in* Kansas watching it. I don’t know if I could do that – watch something that intense that took place in my hometown. That said, I really loved this rather scary story that takes place in Toronto.
